General Information

Commonly known, there are two main developments philosophy in the design of the architectural world after the 21st century. One is the exploration of post-modernism architecture, and the other one is the re-research and development of modernism architecture. Later on, this development of modernism architecture was known as neo modernism architecture (new modern architecture). Neomodern architecture is an architectural style that emerged as a reaction to the complexity acquired by postmodernism and neo eclecticism, which tries to return to simplicity. While post-modern architecture characterized the movement away from the so-called failure of modern architecture: uniformity, loss of local identity, emphasis on efficiency in mass production, and the industrialization of building components, defined as “a desire to make architecture a vehicle of cultural expression.”. Both developments basically develop in a parallel timeline in the 21st century.

Characteristics

Jacques Derrida, the person who introduced Deconstruction in his book “De La Grammatologie” in 1967. Deconstruction itself rejects notions and values once believed and trying to not believe that form and function should go together, and space not should be always giving beauty and joy. Deconstruction seeks to create a new way of building in which traditional notions are re-inscribed in an altered context, which disturbs the understanding of purity in architecture.

According to Charles Jencks, the main idea of Neo-modern Architecture after deconstruction arrival is Post-functionalist, which is there is no clarity in the function of the building. This fragmented style is believed to have developed from Postmodernism, which began in the late 1980s. However, it actually came to public attention with the 1982 Parc de la Villette architectural competition, where Bernard Tschumi, one of the leading names of Deconstructivism, won with his innovative entry.

Even though it is often criticized as being too large and not built with consideration for the scale of human needs, it ultimately presents almost a conceptual approach to the way people feel within a larger urban setting where everything is crowded and cramped, and then all of a sudden, vast open space is at hand.

Personal Regards on Neo modern Architecture

Personally, I reflect on Neo modern Architecture not as a way to revive modern architecture, but to distinguish a new language of modern architecture that tries to explore in a more rhetorical way, abstraction, coded meaning, and alien for many points of view. Neo-modern architecture is an idea to oppose the post-modernism design, and they are trying to distinguish an element from twisting post-modernism formal language to make it the opposite as a disgusted reaction to post-modernism approach on design.
